Bathroom Vanity Replacement in Rockford, IL
Updated
Short answer

A small job that changes the room
A new vanity is the cheapest way to make a bathroom look different. It is also the job most likely to turn up small problems: a corroded shutoff valve, a slow drain, or a soft floor under the old cabinet from years of drips.
What it costs
Typical price, national
- Vanity installed, with the vanity: $400 to $2,200. Angi, vanity installation cost, updated September 11, 2026.
- Old vanity removal: $150 to $500. Angi, vanity installation cost, updated September 11, 2026.
Angi puts the vanity unit alone at $100 to $2,600.
Most of the range is the vanity itself. A stock 30 or 36 inch vanity with a cultured marble top is the low end. A wider vanity, a stone or quartz top, two sinks or a custom size push it up. A double vanity in place of a single means a second drain and supply line, which is a plumbing change. The full list is on the cost page.
Sizing it
- Measure wall to wall, and check the door swing and the toilet. The vanity should not stop the door or crowd the toilet.
- Check where the drain and supply lines come out of the wall. A vanity with a back panel or drawers has to clear them.
- Taller vanities are easier on the back. Shallower ones save floor space in a small room.
- For a seated user, a wall-hung or open vanity with knee space works. See accessible bathrooms.
Tops, sinks and faucets
Undermount sinks under quartz or stone are easy to wipe. Vessel sinks sit on top and add height. If your water leaves white scale, pick a faucet finish that hides spots. The utilities in Winnebago County do not publish hardness, so test your tap.
How hard is hard water
“General guidelines for classification of waters are: 0 to 60 mg/L (milligrams per liter) as calcium carbonate is classified as soft; 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L as hard; and more than 180 mg/L as very hard.”
What gets checked when the old one comes out
The shutoff valves under the sink are the first thing to look at. Old multi-turn valves often seize or drip once they are touched, and replacing them while the cabinet is out is a small cost. The drain trap and the pipe going into the wall get checked for corrosion, especially in older houses with galvanized or steel drain lines. Then the floor where the old cabinet sat gets a look. Years of small drips leave dark or soft spots there, and that is the time to repair them.
If the floor tile stopped at the old cabinet, a new vanity with a different footprint can leave a gap. Plan for that before ordering, either with a vanity the same size or a floor patch.
Permits
Rockford exempts replacing a fixture in the same location when no trap or piping is resized or rearranged, so a same-spot vanity swap does not need a plumbing permit there. Loves Park says permits are needed for any plumbing work and posts no exemption for fixture swaps, so call. In the county towns, ask the Building Division.
A vanity is often the first step of a bigger job. If you are also thinking about the shower, see shower replacement or a full small bathroom remodel. We reply with a written price.

Do I need a plumber to replace a vanity?
A same-spot swap is simple plumbing, and Illinois lets the owner-occupant of a single-family home do their own. Moving the drain or adding a second sink is a bigger plumbing change. Loves Park's code says plumbing is done by licensed plumbers, so ask the city.
Do I need a permit to replace a bathroom vanity in Rockford?

What size vanity is standard?

If the wall is wide enough. It needs a second drain and supply, which is a plumbing change and usually a permit.
