Walk-In Shower Installation in Rockford, IL
Updated
Short answer

Low curb or curbless
Most walk-in showers in older houses get a low curb. The curb holds the water in and lets the floor stay flat outside the shower. A curbless shower has the floor slope gently to a drain with no step at all, which is the easiest to roll or walk into. It is also the hardest to build in an existing house, because the shower floor has to sit lower than the bathroom floor.
On a wood-framed floor that can mean cutting down the joists or building the rest of the bathroom floor up. On a slab it means cutting concrete. The accessible bathroom page explains when curbless is worth that work.
What it costs
Typical price, national
- Walk-in shower: $6,000 to $12,000. Angi, walk-in shower cost, updated October 30, 2026.
Angi lists tile at $2 to $17 a square foot for materials and an acrylic insert at $500 to $2,000. A new shower door runs $600 to $1,350 in Angi's shower remodel guide.
The things that move the price are the size, whether the drain moves, tile or panels, and the glass. A single fixed panel costs less than a hinged door. A linear drain along one wall lets the floor tile be larger, but costs more than a round center drain. The full list is on the cost page.
Glass and hard water
A walk-in shower usually means a lot of clear glass, and clear glass shows water spots. Groundwater wells supply Rockford, Loves Park and most of the villages around them. None of the Winnebago County utilities we checked publishes a hardness figure, so test your own tap before picking glass and fixtures.
How hard is hard water
“General guidelines for classification of waters are: 0 to 60 mg/L (milligrams per liter) as calcium carbonate is classified as soft; 61 to 120 mg/L as moderately hard; 121 to 180 mg/L as hard; and more than 180 mg/L as very hard.”
Rockford's 2025 water report lists iron at 0.1 ppm, well under the state limit, so rust-colored stains from city water are not the usual problem. White mineral spots are. A squeegee after each shower, or a coated glass, keeps it clear.
The rules every shower has to meet
Anti-scald valve, 115 F maximum
“All shower compartments and shower-bath combinations shall be provided with an automatic safety water mixing device to prevent sudden unanticipated changes in water temperature or excessive water temperatures. ... The automatic safety water mixing device shall be adjusted to a maximum setting of 115 degrees Fahrenheit at the time of installation.”
Minimum shower size
“Single family shower compartments or stalls shall have at least 1,024 square inches outside dimension (OD) floor area and shall be at least 32 inches in shortest outside dimension.”
If the walk-in shower replaces a tub, the job is a tub-to-shower conversion and that page covers the demolition side. If it is going into a larger primary bathroom with a separate tub, the primary bathroom page covers the layout.
Details worth deciding early
- Where the handheld goes, and whether you want one at all. A slide bar lets a seated person use it.
- A niche between studs for bottles, so there is no rack hanging off the head.
- A bench, built-in or fold-down. Fold-down seats need blocking in the wall before the tile goes up.
- Blocking for grab bars, even if you do not want bars now.
- Which side the valve sits on, so you can turn the water on without standing under it.
We reply with a written price once the size and drain location are known.

Common questions
Walk-In Showers: questions
How much does a walk-in shower cost?
Angi puts a walk-in shower at $6,000 to $12,000, with an average of $9,000, a national figure. Tile, glass and moving the drain push it up. All the lines are on the cost page.
What is the difference between a walk-in shower and a regular shower?
A walk-in shower has a low curb or no curb and usually a fixed glass panel or wide opening instead of a door and a tall threshold. A regular stall or tub-shower has a higher threshold to step over.
Are curbless showers worth it?
For a wheelchair or a walker they are. For everyone else a low curb does the same job for less, because a curbless floor has to be dropped below the bathroom floor. The curbless shower pros and cons guide goes through it.
Does a walk-in shower need a door?
Not always. A fixed panel with an open end works if the shower is long enough and the head points away from the opening. A small walk-in shower usually needs a door or a second panel to keep the floor dry.
How do you keep glass shower doors clean with hard water?
Squeegee the glass after each shower and use a coated glass if you can. Winnebago County utilities do not publish hardness, so a hardness test on your own tap tells you how much scale to expect.
Do walk-in showers add value to a home?
They appeal to older buyers and to anyone tired of stepping over a tub. If it is the only bathing spot in the house, some buyers with kids will want a tub somewhere. The resale value guide has the Cost vs. Value numbers.
