Cost and budget
How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Rockford?
No cost guide publishes a Rockford bathroom remodel price. The nearest local figure is the 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Chicago; every other range on this site is a national figure and is labelled that way. Angi puts a full remodel at $6,651 to $17,661 with an average of $12,155, and This Old House says $6,456 to $24,715. The 2025 Cost vs. Value report prices a midrange Chicago bath remodel at $24,072. The cost page shows every guide with its date.
Can you redo a bathroom for $5,000 or $10,000?
For a small room, often. Angi puts a minor refresh at $3,000 to $10,000 and a small full bath of about 30 square feet at $4,500 to $6,000, while a partial remodel runs $10,000 to $25,000. Moving the toilet or the shower drain is what pushes a budget past those numbers. The budget guide and the cost page break it down.
What does a tub-to-shower conversion cost?
Angi gives $1,200 to $15,000 and This Old House gives $2,000 to $12,000, both national. A custom tiled walk-in conversion sits at $3,500 to $15,000 on Angi. See tub-to-shower conversions and the cost page.
Where does the money go in a bathroom remodel?
Labor is 40% to 65% of the total on Angi's remodel page. Demolition alone runs $1,000 to $2,300, and moving a fixture three feet or more adds $500 to $1,000. Keeping the toilet, tub and sink drains where they are is the single biggest saving. The cost page lists every line.
Does a bathroom remodel pay for itself when you sell?
Only part of it comes back. In the 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Chicago, a midrange bath remodel cost $24,072 and recouped 66.4% at resale, and an upscale one recouped 34.2%. The resale guide has the full table, and the cost page has the prices.
Timing and order of work
How long does a bathroom remodel take?
It depends on whether the layout changes and whether a permit and inspections are involved. A same-spot swap of a vanity or toilet can be a day, while a gut remodel runs in stages: demolition, rough plumbing and electrical, inspection, walls and waterproofing, tile, fixtures, final inspection. The timeline guide walks through each stage.
What order does a bathroom remodel go in?
Demolition first, then anything behind the walls (plumbing, wiring, the fan duct), then the rough inspection if there is a permit, then backer board and waterproofing, tile, paint, and fixtures last. The order of work guide explains why the sequence matters.
Permits and plumbing rules
Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom in Rockford?
For most real remodels, a permit is needed. Rockford requires a plumbing permit to install, alter or replace plumbing, but replacing a fixture in the same spot without resizing or moving any trap or piping is exempt. Moving a toilet, tub or shower drain needs one. Loves Park requires permits for remodeling and all plumbing work. The permit guide covers every town.
Can I do my own bathroom plumbing in Illinois?
The owner who lives in a single-family home may do their own plumbing under the Illinois Plumbing License Law, to code and subject to inspection, but may not pay anyone other than a licensed plumber to help. Rockford's FAQ says the same. Loves Park's residential code is worded more strictly, so ask the city first. The permit guide has the quotes.
What does Illinois require for a new shower valve?
Every shower and tub-shower needs an automatic anti-scald mixing valve, pressure-balancing or thermostatic, set to no more than 115 F when it is installed. Turning down the water heater does not count. See the anti-scald valve guide.
How small can a shower be in Illinois?
The Illinois Plumbing Code sets a minimum of 1,024 square inches of floor area for a single-family shower stall, at least 32 inches on the shortest side. That rules out some small corner units. The shower size guide explains how it is measured.
Does a basement bathroom need a pump?
When the drains sit below the sewer line, the Illinois Plumbing Code requires a sealed, vented sump with an automatic sewage ejector. The ejector pump guide and adding a bathroom cover it.
Is there a lead paint rule for older bathrooms?
For homes built before 1978, the EPA requires anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces to be certified in lead-safe work practices, one-person shops included. 74.3% of Rockford's housing was built before 1980. The lead paint guide explains the small-job exception.
Showers, tubs and accessible bathrooms
Should I keep at least one bathtub?
There is no rule either way. The real question is whether the house would be left with no tub at all; if another full bath keeps one, converting this one gives up less. The tub and resale guide sets out both sides.
Acrylic or tile for a shower?
Acrylic is faster and has no grout to clean; Angi puts an acrylic insert at $500 to $2,000 for the material. Tile costs more in labor and needs a properly built waterproof pan, but any size or layout is possible. The acrylic vs tile guide compares them, with prices on the cost page.
Is a walk-in tub or a walk-in shower better for aging in place?
It depends on whether the person wants to keep taking baths. Angi puts a walk-in tub at $4,000 to $15,000 and a walk-in shower at $6,000 to $12,000, both national. The comparison guide lays out the trade-offs, and the cost page lists both.
Is there help paying for an accessible bathroom in Illinois?
There is no Illinois income tax credit for accessibility work that we could confirm. Illinois does have a Homestead Improvement Exemption that keeps up to $75,000 of added value off the tax bill for 4 years, and a $2,000 yearly exemption for homeowners with disabilities. The paying for it guide covers the state and Rockford programs and their status.
Hiring and how this site works
Does Illinois license bathroom remodelers?
Illinois does not license general contractors or remodelers at the state level. Plumbers are state licensed, and Rockford registers electricians each year. The hiring guide covers what to check instead.
What must a bathroom remodeling contract include?
On any job over $1,000, the Home Repair and Remodeling Act requires a signed written contract or work order with the total cost and the parts and materials listed with reasonable particularity. The contractor must give you the "Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights" pamphlet before you sign, and must carry liability insurance. The contract rules guide has the details.

Why does the site show ranges instead of prices?
No cost guide publishes a Rockford bathroom remodel price. The nearest local figure is the 2025 Cost vs. Value report for Chicago; every other range on this site is a national figure and is labelled that way. Each range here has its source and date, and the price that counts is the one in your written contract. See the cost page.
