Shower Replacement in Rockford, IL

Updated

Short answer

Shower replacement swaps an old stall, base or surround for a new one, usually in the same spot. Angi puts it at $4,448 to $12,373, average $8,204, from 7,466 verified projects nationwide. A same-spot swap with no drain move is the cheaper end.

When a shower needs replacing

The common reasons are a cracked fiberglass base, grout that keeps failing, soft floor in front of the shower, or a stall that just looks worn out. A soft spot on the floor or a stain on the ceiling below means water has been getting past the base for a while, and the replacement is going to include some subfloor.

In a lot of houses from the 1970s and 1980s the original shower is a one-piece fiberglass unit. Those were set before the drywall went up and often will not come out the bathroom door in one piece. They get cut up in place, and the new one comes in as a multi-piece kit.

What it costs

Typical price, national

Angi's shower remodel guide puts the average at $7,000, up to $15,000 for a full overhaul. A new shower door alone runs $600 to $1,350.

The swing in price is mostly the walls. Acrylic panels over a new base keep it near the low end. Tile walls, a new valve in a new spot and glass push it up. If you want tile, the tile shower page explains the extra steps. If you are swapping a tub for a shower, that is a tub-to-shower conversion. Every price is on the cost page.

The valve

The valve is the part behind the handle. If the old one is a two-handle valve or an early single handle, the replacement is the time to change it, because the wall is already open. Any new valve has to meet the Illinois anti-scald rule.

Illinois anti-scald rule

“All shower compartments and shower-bath combinations shall be provided with an automatic safety water mixing device to prevent sudden unanticipated changes in water temperature or excessive water temperatures. ... The automatic safety water mixing device shall be adjusted to a maximum setting of 115 degrees Fahrenheit at the time of installation.”
Illinois State Plumbing Code, 77 Ill. Adm. Code 890.690 (showers).

Permits in Rockford and nearby

Rockford's plumbing page exempts "The repair or replacement of fixtures, water softeners or water purifiers in the same location, provided that it does not require the resizing or rearrangement of any trap or piping." So a shower swapped in the same spot with the same drain may not need a plumbing permit in the city. New valve piping or a moved drain does. Rockford's remodel permit fee is 0.55% of the job value plus $56 per trade permit, from an undated schedule, so confirm it.

Loves Park says permits are needed for any remodeling, electrical or plumbing work, and its residential code says plumbing is done by state-licensed plumbers. In the county towns, call the Building Division. The details for each place are on the service area pages.

Who can do the plumbing

“Nothing herein contained shall prohibit the owner occupant or lessee occupant of a single family residence, or the owner of a single family residence under construction for his or her occupancy, from planning, installing, altering or repairing the plumbing system of such residence”
Illinois Plumbing License Law, 225 ILCS 320/3.

What gets checked when the old shower comes out

  • The subfloor under the base, especially at the front edge where water lands.
  • The studs and insulation behind the walls, looking for old leaks.
  • The drain and trap, which in older houses may be galvanized or cast iron.
  • The exhaust fan. A shower with no working fan grows mildew no matter how new it is. Angi puts a fan install at $120 to $900.

We reply with a written price. If the walls turn up rot, that is priced before the extra work starts.

Common questions

Shower Replacement: questions

How much does it cost to replace a shower?

Angi puts shower installation or replacement at $4,448 to $12,373, with an average of $8,204, a national figure. A prefab kit alone runs $1,000 to $8,000 before labor. See the cost page for the rest.

Do I need a permit to replace a shower in Rockford?

Rockford exempts replacing a fixture in the same location when no trap or piping is resized or rearranged. A new valve location or a moved drain needs a plumbing permit. Loves Park requires a permit for any plumbing work. The permits guide covers each town.

Can I replace just the shower base?

Sometimes, if the walls are a separate kit and in good shape. With a one-piece unit or tile that runs down onto the base, the walls usually come out too. A soft floor in front of the shower means the subfloor needs a look either way.

How long does it take to replace a shower?

A same-spot prefab swap is often a few working days. Tile walls, a moved drain or a valve change add days for curing and inspections. The how long does a remodel take guide has the steps.

Should I replace the shower valve when replacing the shower?

Usually. The wall is open, and any new valve has to meet the Illinois anti-scald rule, set to 115 F maximum at installation. Changing it later means opening the new wall.

Can a homeowner replace their own shower in Illinois?

Illinois lets the owner who lives in a single-family house do their own plumbing to code and subject to inspection. Loves Park's code says plumbing is done by licensed plumbers, so ask the city first.
