Walk-In Tubs in Rockford, IL

Updated

Short answer

A walk-in tub has a watertight door in the side and a built-in seat, so you step in instead of climbing over. Angi puts it at $4,000 to $15,000, average $8,000, and wheelchair-accessible models at $10,000 to $16,000, national figures.

Who a walk-in tub is for

A walk-in tub is for someone who wants to keep taking baths but can no longer step over a tub wall or get up from the bottom of a standard tub. In Winnebago County 26,511 owner households are headed by someone 65 or older, 34.7% of all owners. In Loves Park that share is 37.1%, and in Lake Summerset it is 57.9%.

If showers are fine for you, a walk-in shower with a seat is usually cheaper, quicker to use and easier to sell later. The walk-in tub vs walk-in shower guide compares the two.

What it costs

Typical price, national

Angi adds $300 to $1,000 for the permit, site prep, demolition and disposal.

The tub itself is most of the bill. Features like jets, a heated seat or a fast-drain pump add to it. The install may also need a larger water heater or a dedicated electrical circuit, which Angi's range may not include. Every line is on the cost page.

Things to know before buying one

  • You get in and close the door before filling, and the water has to drain before the door opens. You sit in the tub while it fills and empties.
  • Walk-in tubs hold a lot of water. Check the water heater size against the tub before ordering.
  • Most fit a standard 60-inch alcove, so they usually go where the old tub was.
  • The door seal is the part that wears. Ask what the manufacturer covers and for how long, in writing.
  • A handheld shower on the deck lets you rinse off without standing.

Getting it into the house

A walk-in tub comes in one piece, and it is taller and heavier than a standard tub. Measure every doorway, stair and turn between the driveway and the bathroom before ordering, including the bathroom door itself. In older houses with narrow stairs to a second-floor bath, that measurement decides the model.

The floor matters too. A full walk-in tub with a person in it is a lot of weight on one spot. In an older house the joists under the bathroom are worth a look, and a sagging floor gets fixed before the tub goes in. The old tub, the surround around it and often part of the floor tile come out, so the walls around the new tub usually get new panels or tile at the same time.

Beware the in-home sales pitch

Walk-in tubs are often sold in the living room by a salesperson with a same-day discount. Illinois gives buyers 65 and older a way out of that.

Illinois cancellation right for buyers 65 and older

“A person age 65 or older who purchases home repair or remodeling services from an uninvited solicitor may cancel any contract with a person engaged in home repair or remodeling by notifying that person within 15 full business days following the day on which the contract was signed if the agreement for the home repair or remodeling was made at the home of the purchaser.”
Home Repair and Remodeling Act, 815 ILCS 513.

Written contract over $1,000

“Prior to initiating home repair or remodeling work for over $1,000, a person engaged in the business of home repair or remodeling shall furnish to the customer for signature a written contract or work order that states the total cost, including parts and materials listed with reasonable particularity and any charge for an estimate.”
