Walk-In Tub or Walk-In Shower?

Updated

Short answer

Choose a walk-in tub if a soak matters to you and you can sit while it fills and drains. Choose a walk-in shower if you want the simplest, lowest step-in and the lower price. Both are common for owners who plan to stay.

Part of Walk-In Tubs.

When getting in and out of the tub gets harder, most people end up choosing between these two. Both remove the high step-over. They differ in price, in how you bathe, and in how easy they are to live with. The tubs are on our walk-in tubs page and the showers on walk-in showers.

The prices

Typical price, national

A walk-in tub averages $8,000 and a walk-in shower $9,000 on Angi's national numbers. Angi notes that permits, site prep, demolition and disposal add to a walk-in tub price. See the cost page for everything side by side.

Because the door has to stay shut until the water drains, a walk-in tub means sitting in the tub while it empties. How long that takes varies by model, so ask for the maker's fill and drain figures for the exact tub.

Who chooses which, around here

These are the owners most likely to be deciding. Across Winnebago County, 34.7% of owner households are headed by someone 65 or older. Here is the share by town:

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2020-2024 5-year, via Census Reporter, table B25007, share of owner households whose householder is 65 or older. Places under 150 households are left out.

A walk-in tub suits someone who loves a soak, has sore joints that warm water helps, and is fine waiting while it fills and drains. A walk-in shower suits someone who wants the simplest daily routine, uses or may use a wheelchair, or wants to spend less. Many people add a seat and a handheld to a walk-in shower and find they do not miss the tub.

Options in between

It does not have to be one or the other. A few middle paths come up often:

  • Keep the tub, add help. Grab bars, a tub transfer bench and a handheld shower cost far less than either new fixture.
  • A low-curb shower with a seat. A fold-down seat and a handheld give much of the comfort of sitting without the wait of a tub.
  • Tub in one bath, shower in the other. In a house with two full baths, each person can use what suits them.

Watch for high-pressure in-home sales

Walk-in tubs are often sold in the home, in one visit. Illinois gives buyers 65 and older a cooling-off period when the salesperson came uninvited:

The right to cancel

“A person age 65 or older who purchases home repair or remodeling services from an uninvited solicitor may cancel any contract with a person engaged in home repair or remodeling by notifying that person within 15 full business days following the day on which the contract was signed if the agreement for the home repair or remodeling was made at the home of the purchaser.”
Home Repair and Remodeling Act, 815 ILCS 513.

Any job over $1,000 also needs a written contract with the total cost and the materials listed. See Illinois remodeling contract rules.

Either way

Both need an anti-scald valve set no hotter than 115 F, and both are plumbing work. If the whole room needs to work for the next twenty years, look at the full accessible bathroom approach and how to pay for it.

Quick answers

Is a walk-in tub or a walk-in shower better for seniors?

A walk-in tub suits someone who wants to soak and can sit while it fills and drains. A walk-in shower is simpler, lower to enter, works with a wheelchair when curbless, and usually costs less.

How much does a walk-in tub cost?

Angi puts a walk-in tub at $4,000 to $15,000 (average $8,000) and wheelchair-accessible models at $10,000 to $16,000, national figures. See the cost page.

Is a walk-in shower cheaper than a walk-in tub?

Usually. Angi's national averages are $9,000 for a walk-in shower and $8,000 for a walk-in tub. See the cost page for both ranges.

Can I cancel a walk-in tub contract in Illinois?

A buyer 65 or older who signed at home with a salesperson who came uninvited can cancel within 15 full business days of signing, under the Home Repair and Remodeling Act.

Do you have to sit in a walk-in tub while it drains?

You do, because the door stays sealed until the water is out. Drain time depends on the model, so ask for the maker's figures for the tub you are considering.
