Can you redo a bathroom for $5,000 or $10,000?
Updated
Short answer

The honest answer depends on two things: how big the room is and whether anything moves. A powder room with new fixtures in the same spots is a different job from a hall bath where the tub becomes a walk-in shower. The small bathroom remodel page covers the room size most budget questions are about.
What the cost guides say
- Minor refresh (fixtures, paint, vanity): $3,000 to $10,000 (Angi, bathroom remodel cost, national, updated October 27, 2026)
- Partial remodel: $10,000 to $25,000 (Angi, bathroom remodel cost, national, updated October 27, 2026)
- Full gut and rebuild: $25,000 to $80,000 (Angi, bathroom remodel cost, national, updated October 27, 2026)
- Half bath or powder room, about 15 square feet: $2,250 to $3,000 (Angi, small bathroom and half bath remodel cost, national, updated October 6, 2026)
- Small full bath, about 30 square feet: $4,500 to $6,000 (Angi, small bathroom and half bath remodel cost, national, updated October 6, 2026)
- Full bathroom remodel, most homeowners: $6,651 to $17,661 (Angi, bathroom remodel cost, national, updated October 27, 2026), average $12,155
This Old House lands higher, at $6,456 to $24,715 (This Old House, bathroom remodel cost, national, updated July 2, 2026) with an average of $15,586. These are national figures. No cost guide publishes a Rockford price.
What $5,000 can cover
At $5,000 you are inside Angi's minor-refresh band and its half bath and small full bath ranges. Realistic jobs at that level keep every fixture where it is:
- A powder room with a new vanity, faucet, toilet, mirror, light and paint.
- A small full bath with a new vanity and toilet and a new acrylic tub surround over the existing tub.
- One fixed problem done right: a leaking shower rebuilt, or a new exhaust fan and the damaged drywall behind the old one.
For scale, Angi puts a vanity installed with the vanity at $400 to $2,200 (Angi, vanity installation cost, national, updated September 11, 2026), a toilet install at $224 to $533 (Angi, toilet installation cost, national, updated May 30, 2026) for labor, and an exhaust fan install at $120 to $900 (Angi, bathroom exhaust fan installation cost, national, updated September 10, 2026).
What $10,000 can cover
$10,000 sits at the top of the minor band and the bottom of Angi's partial band, and a bit under the $12,155 national average for a full remodel. In a small hall bath that usually means new fixtures, a new floor and a new shower or tub surround, with the layout unchanged. A tub-to-shower conversion can fit: Angi puts it at $1,200 to $15,000 (Angi, tub-to-shower conversion cost, national, updated July 8, 2026), and the wide range is the difference between a prefab base and walls and a tiled walk-in. The tub-to-shower conversion page has the details.
Where budgets break
- Moving fixtures. Angi puts moving a fixture three feet or more at $500 to $1,000 (Angi, cost to run new bathroom plumbing, national, updated September 22, 2026). Keep the toilet where it is and the budget goes much further.
- Hidden damage. In the This Old House survey, about one in three homeowners spent more than expected because of hidden plumbing or structural issues. In Rockford, 46.5% of homes were built before 1960 (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). Old bathrooms hide old drains and soft subfloor. Hold back part of the budget for it.
- Labor. Angi counts labor at 40% to 65% of a remodel. A cheaper tile does not shrink the hours to set it.
- Permits. Small, but real. Rockford's schedule prices remodels at 0.55% of job value plus $56 per trade permit; the permit guide has every town's rule.
Doing part of it yourself
Painting, simple demolition and hauling are the usual places a homeowner saves. Plumbing is different: in Illinois only a licensed plumber or the owner living in a single-family home may do it, and you cannot pay an unlicensed helper to do it for you. In a house built before 1978, a paid contractor disturbing painted surfaces has to be lead-safe certified.
How to get real numbers
Get at least two written quotes on the same scope, and make sure each one lists the materials. Illinois requires a written contract for any remodeling job over $1,000, with materials listed with reasonable particularity. Every national range is on the bathroom remodel cost page.

Quick answers
Can you remodel a bathroom for $5,000?
A powder room or a small bath with the layout unchanged often can. Angi puts a half bath at $2,250 to $3,000 and a small full bath at $4,500 to $6,000, national figures. More ranges are on the cost page.
Is $10,000 enough to renovate a bathroom?
For a small bath with fixtures left in place, often. It sits under Angi's national average of $12,155 for a full remodel, so a gut with moved plumbing usually costs more. See the cost page.
What is a realistic budget for a bathroom remodel?
Angi's most-homeowners range for a full remodel is $6,651 to $17,661, average $12,155, and This Old House reports $6,456 to $24,715. Both are national. Plan a cushion for hidden damage. Details on the cost page.
Is keeping the same layout cheaper?
Usually much cheaper. Moving a fixture 3 feet or more costs $500 to $1,000 on its own by Angi's national figure, and it adds a plumbing permit and inspection in most towns. More on the cost page.
What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?
Labor, which Angi counts at 40% to 65% of the total. Homeowners in the This Old House survey also named materials as a top expense. National ranges by job are on the cost page.
