How long does a bathroom remodel take?
Updated
Short answer

The answer has two parts: the days a crew is in the room, and the days you wait on paperwork and inspections. Only the first part is what most cost guides talk about. The second part is set by your town, and it is the part people forget to plan for. If your project is a small hall bath or a half bath, the small bathroom remodel page covers the scope and prices.
What the survey found
This Old House surveyed homeowners who had recently remodeled a bathroom. Nearly two-thirds said the remodel lasted between one and four weeks. About one in five said it stretched longer than a month. The same survey found that about one in three spent more than they expected because of hidden plumbing or structural problems, and hidden problems are also what stretch a schedule. A rotted subfloor under an old tub or a leaking drain inside a wall has to be fixed before anything new goes on top of it.
No source we found publishes a Rockford timeline, so treat the survey as the national picture and add the local steps below.
What makes a job shorter or longer
- Same layout or new layout. Keeping the toilet, tub and sink where they are avoids new drain and supply lines. Moving a fixture means new rough plumbing and, in most towns, a plumbing permit and an inspection before the wall closes.
- Prefab or built-up tile. A one-piece or panel shower goes in faster than a tile shower, which needs a pan, waterproofing, tile setting and grout, each with its own drying time. The order-of-work guide walks through each step.
- Special-order parts. A custom vanity top, glass door or walk-in tub is often measured after demolition and made to fit, so the room can sit waiting for it.
- Age of the house. In Rockford, 46.5% of homes were built before 1960 and the median home was built in 1963 (Census ACS, 2020 to 2024). Older bathrooms are where the hidden problems in the survey live: galvanized or cast iron drains, old tile set in a mortar bed, and walls that are not square.
- Lead-safe work. In a home built before 1978, a paid contractor who disturbs painted surfaces has to follow EPA lead-safe practices, which adds setup and cleanup time. The lead paint guide explains when it applies.
The local clock: permit review
Permit review is the first wait, and each office states its own pace. These are the ones that publish it:
Village of Winnebago. The Village states a building permit review time of 48 to 72 hours. (Village of Winnebago, Building Safety and Permitting)
Pecatonica. The Village states a review time of 3 to 5 business days. (Village of Pecatonica, Building Permits)
Roscoe. If the house has no water meter and no water bill, it is probably on a private well, which changes bathroom choices (softener sizing, staining on fixtures). The Village's own zoning permit review can take up to two weeks in peak season. (Winnebago County Health Department, private wells and septic)
Rockford, Loves Park, Machesney Park and the Winnebago County Building Division do not publish a review time that we found. Ask when you apply. The permit guide covers which bathroom jobs need a permit in each town.
The local clock: inspections
A remodel that changes plumbing or wiring is inspected while the walls are still open, and the crew cannot close them until it passes. That makes inspection scheduling part of the timeline.
Rockford. Post the permit where it can be seen from the street or at the main entrance before work starts, and request inspections one full business day ahead. Rockford adopted the 2021 IRC with local amendments for permits submitted on or after December 31, 2024, and plumbing follows the Illinois Plumbing Code with local amendments. (City of Rockford, Building Permits)
Machesney Park. Loves Park inspects Machesney Park work, so once the Village issues the permit, inspections are scheduled through the Loves Park Building Department at (815) 654-5033. (Village of Machesney Park, Building Department)
Loves Park. Permits expire one year after issue, or six months if no significant work has been done, and the permit has to be posted where it can be seen from the street. (City of Loves Park, Building Department)
Loves Park's fee schedule also includes three inspections and charges for extra ones, which is a fair hint at how many visits a typical permitted job gets.
Living with one bathroom
A lot of older houses here have one full bath, which makes the length of the job a real question, not a detail. Ask the contractor which days the toilet will be out and whether it can be reset at the end of each day during demolition. Ask when water will be shut off. If the bathroom is the only one, a phased plan (toilet back the first evening, shower last) is worth asking for even if it adds a day.
Put the schedule in the contract
Illinois requires a written contract for any home remodeling job over $1,000. The law sets what the contract must state about price and materials. It does not require a finish date, so ask for start and finish dates in writing anyway. The contract guide lists what has to be in it.
What it costs
Time and money move together, because labor is 40% to 65% of a bathroom remodel by Angi's count. Angi puts a full remodel at $6,651 to $17,661 (Angi, bathroom remodel cost, national, updated October 27, 2026), and a half bath at $2,250 to $3,000 (Angi, small bathroom and half bath remodel cost, national, updated October 6, 2026). Every range, with its source, is on the bathroom remodel cost page.

Quick answers
How long does a typical bathroom remodel take?
One to four weeks for most. In a This Old House survey, nearly two-thirds of homeowners said their remodel lasted that long and about one in five said it went past a month. Permit review and inspections are on top of that.
Why do bathroom remodels take longer than planned?
Hidden problems. About one in three homeowners in the same survey spent more than expected because of hidden plumbing or structural issues, and those also add days. Older houses with original drains and mortar-bed tile are where they show up.
Can I use my bathroom during a remodel?
Not for most of it. Ask the contractor which days the toilet and water will be off and whether the toilet can be reset at night during demolition. In a one-bath house, a phased plan is worth asking for.
How long does a permit take in Winnebago County?
It depends on the office. The Village of Winnebago states 48 to 72 hours, Pecatonica 3 to 5 business days, and Roscoe up to two weeks for its zoning permit in peak season. Rockford, Loves Park and the county do not publish a review time.
Does a longer job cost more?
Usually, because labor is a large part of the bill. Angi counts labor at 40% to 65% of a bathroom remodel. National price ranges are on the cost page.
